It is a tough market out there. Trying to keep your good employees can be an exhausting proposition. While many companies look at the "obvious" things such as money, benefits, and working conditions, these may be items that you simply can not change from a business feasibility perspective. Why not take a look at what might be more within your grasp? Why not take a look at your current leaders? Or, do you employ bosses? What I mean is an additional piece to a solid employee retention strategy which is to ensure that you are supporting your leaders be more than just the "boss".
5 Characteristics of Effective Leaders
Good leaders share future direction with their employees, bosses don't
Good leaders handle challenges with little impact, intentionally or unintentionally, to employees, bosses don't
Good leaders offer the highest quality in terms of products, services & experience for both customers & employees, bosses are typically scrambling to meet the minimums
Good leaders consider employees their most important asset, bosses are focused on numbers
Good leaders inspire employees confident in their ability to leader then, bosses tend to inspire passive-aggressive frustration as employees question decisions that impact them negatively
So how do you assist your leaders to be good leaders? Ensure that your leaders are truly available for their employees; they create open rapport and effectively listen to them. And, one of my favorites...ensure your leaders are behaving in a steady & structured fashion; have a good handbook & follow it, and promote fairness and consistency in its' application.
